Pairing notes

What wine goes with fruit tart?

The short answer: a light, sweet wine with gentle bubbles. Moscato d’Asti is perfect. Late-harvest Riesling and Coteaux du Layon are richer alternatives.

Why it works

A fruit tart is fresh, sweet and delicate. A heavy dessert wine would smother it.

Moscato d’Asti is low in alcohol, lightly sweet and softly sparkling. It smells of peach, orange blossom and fresh grapes. It matches the fruit without weight, and its bubbles keep everything light.

Our bottle

Paolo Saracco Moscato d’Asti (about €15.50). A family firm in Castiglione Tinella, in Piedmont, since 1900. Moscato is its life’s work: feather-light, gently fizzing, all white peach.

Match the wine to the tart

  • Peach, apricot or strawberry: Moscato d’Asti.
  • Apple tart or tarte Tatin: a sweet Chenin Blanc from the Loire, like Coteaux du Layon.
  • Lemon tart: a late-harvest Riesling, which has the acidity to match.
  • Plum tart, or Luxembourg’s Quetschentaart: a sweet Gewürztraminer or a late-harvest Pinot Gris.
  • Berry tart: Brachetto d’Acqui.

Watch out for

Dry wines, including Brut sparkling wine. Next to a sweet dessert, they taste sour.

Serve it right

Moscato d’Asti at 6–8 °C, well chilled. Drink it young, within a year or two of the vintage.
