Pairing notes

What wine goes with goat’s cheese?

The short answer: Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, especially Sancerre. It is one of the most reliable pairings in the world.

Why it works

Fresh goat’s cheese is tangy, creamy and a little grassy. It needs a wine with at least as much acidity, or the wine tastes flat.

Loire Sauvignon Blanc has bright acidity and notes of cut grass, citrus and flint. Its freshness cuts the creamy texture, and its green notes echo the cheese. They also come from the same place: the Loire Valley is famous for both.

Our bottle

Domaine Vacheron Sancerre Blanc (about €28). A biodynamic family domaine on the flinty hills of Sancerre. Citrus, stone and freshness, made for Crottin de Chavignol, the local goat’s cheese.

Other good choices

  • Cheaper: a Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, at about half the price.
  • From further away: a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, fruitier and louder.
  • Aged, firmer goat’s cheese: a Chenin Blanc from Vouvray or Savennières.
  • Red, if you must: a light Loire red, like a chilled Chinon.

Watch out for

Big, oaky whites and tannic reds. Both clash with the tangy cheese.

Serve it right

Sauvignon Blanc at 8–10 °C. Serve the goat’s cheese at room temperature, with good bread and a few walnuts.
